How Colne NearMe checks business listings

How directory profiles are researched, when pages are indexed, how corrections work and why paid placement is kept separate.

A useful directory needs more than a large number of names. Colne NearMe applies publication checks so that search engines and visitors are directed towards profiles with enough information to support a real decision.

Where listing information comes from

Profiles may use official business websites, public business pages, recognised registers and information submitted by an authorised representative or visitor. Research sources are recorded on stronger profiles so readers can see where key claims were checked. A source documents research; it does not mean that source or Colne NearMe endorses the business.

What earns an indexable profile

A public business can appear inside the on-site directory without automatically receiving a standalone search-engine page. Before a profile is eligible for indexing, it must have a Colne-area address, a direct contact route, a substantial business-specific description and at least one recorded research source. Drafts, placeholders and incomplete records are excluded from the XML sitemap.

How categories are handled

Names from different data sources are normalised into consistent categories, and obvious duplicate records are combined through redirects. Very small category slices are kept out of the search index until they contain enough researched businesses to be useful. Visitors can still discover those businesses through the main directory.

Corrections, ownership and closure reports

Anyone can report inaccurate information, but changes are reviewed before publication. Ownership claims may require evidence such as a business-domain email address or a corresponding change on an official website. This protects existing profiles from unauthorised edits. Submit a request through the add, claim or correct form.

Advertising does not buy an endorsement

Google advertising is labelled “Advertisement”, and paid directory placement is labelled “Featured listing”. Payment can affect visibility but not the factual correction process, the indexing threshold or the editorial description of a business. Read more on the advertising policy page.

Dates and limitations

Where available, a profile shows the date its sources were reviewed. Businesses can move, close or change services after that date, so visitors should confirm important details directly before travelling, buying or booking. The directory is a local discovery tool, not a substitute for professional checks, official registers or personal judgement.
